Many schools outsource their cleaning and catering contracts, they don’t always realise that they can outsource their premises staffing just as easily. Campion Premises Service have been providing schools with quality premises managers since 2008. Our experience taught us that school business managers were having to take on the burden of running the school premises, which placed an enormous strain on their workloads. Keeping up to date with logs, records and testing plus health ∓ safety was a headache for the SBM’s we were working with.

Our school partners had been happy with the quality of Campion staff that we sent to them but we felt that we could improve on our service by effectively taking on the premises management as a whole. We looked at these factors and made the determination to offer outsourcing of the school premises staffing as our focus. We are able to place our experienced managers directly into the school or TUPE over existing staff. This saves the school in multiple ways, firstly from the cost of advertising and recruiting and secondly by managing our own staff and absorbing the on costs comparative to sourcing the role directly. Our operations manager oversees our staff and liaises between the SBM. Having high-quality staff that are computer literate, and fully trained ensures the smooth running of the school. But it is imperative that they are able to take on the mantle of testing, regulations and dealing with outside agencies and projected works. We rarely hear the term ‘caretaker’ now as the role has increasingly expanded and become vital from a health & safety perspective. We heard many horror stories of agency staff that had little or no experience in a school environment and though cheaper to employ were not safely managing the school premises.

On costs play a huge factor as some London boroughs have pension contributions as high as 30% which for many schools with staffing issues, is a serious problem. Having a year-round service free from worry about sickness and holiday cover was also an important concern. Our schools appreciated the continuity of service and the security of having a service level agreement in place. Our strategy as a company was to listen to the issues our school partners were facing and help alleviate their burden. Many schools and academies are choosing to outsource their cleaning and catering but are unaware that it is possible to outsource their premises staffing as a cost effective and efficient saving also. We have been supporting schools for many years now with our premises service and have built a solid reputation for offering great value service level agreements at a time when budgets are increasingly squeezed.

Our school partners enjoy the peace of mind that outsourcing gives them as their premises are not only covered year- round but they have staff who are fully vetted and trained in health & safety. Pension contributions are very high in some London boroughs and the nature of the premises manager role has changed significantly over the years. Premises staff are required to work closely with the SBM to have a good knowledge of health & safety practices and
policy, maintaining the security of the school site at all times.
