Pupil Premium Changes Announced to Help Disadvantaged Pupils

Feb 13, 2020 | Finance Posts

The DfE has recently announced that the pupil premium rate is increasing.

From April 2020 rates will increase by £25 for primary pupils and £20 for secondary pupils.

The extra funding is to help improve outcomes for disadvantaged children and other pupils who need additional support.

In addition, the pupil premium plus will rise by £45 per pupil and the service premium will rise from £300 to £310 per pupil.

Evidence shows that children from disadvantaged backgrounds:

  • generally face extra challenges in reaching their potential at school
  • often do not perform as well as their peers

The pupil premium grant is designed to allow schools to help disadvantaged pupils by improving their progress and the exam results they achieve.
